FrontlineSMS:Radio and partners are already working directly with local radio stations to collect feedback about the use of software to influence the design and development of the radio software. Our pilot will involve partners from Kenya, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Malawi amongst others. Radio is the dominant broadcasting tool in Africa, with about 90% of households owning a radio; however communication remains mostly one-way. In certain communities where audience literacy rate is below 70% and even as low as 50%, radio is remains the most appropriate medium for communications compared to other media like the Internet or even newspapers. Internet penetration is very low, with about 10% of Africans having access.  Meanwhile 1 in 2 people own a mobile phone and text messaging constitutes a primary form of communication. Text messaging can be a primary form of communication with the potential to save people time and money compared to other ways of exchanging information, such as travelling or calling. From our user survey we have heard from radio stations using FrontlineSMS all around the globe. Stations using FrontlineSMS or on their way to implementing it reported from Uruguay, Malawi, Nepal, Sierra Leone, Indonesia, Cambodia, Ireland, Belgium, Latin America, Australia, Canada, Guyana, UK and Mongolia. Watch the community grow on the map above!  To add your station please fill out the survey.
